When I shift from 2nd to 3rd there is a grinding sound. This doesn't happen when shifting to any other gear and it doesn't even happen when shifting to 3rd from any gear other than 2nd.

Anybody out there know what the problem might be? Is it serious? How can I fix it?

Please pass me your wisdom. Thanks.

I thing the tranny cocktail or a change of trans fluid will probably help. Check around the transaxle forum and search for grind and FM (friction modifier) and you should come across several similar posts addressing this problem. I'm an ATX guy myself, but I've seen tons of posts on improving the MTX shifting using different fluid.

Mine does it, but I've found if I hesitate, just a second, before putting it into gear it won't grind. The hard part is teaching yourself that hesitation.

what model is your car and how many miles does it have on it??? my 00 svt is in the shop right now for that prob. i just bought the car a month ago, drove it for a couple days and it started doing it. i got to drive the car for only two weeks then i had to take it in. i was doing the same thing, hesitating in neutral before i shifted into 3rd. my 3rd gear synchros (or synchro, whatever )were goin out. it's been in the shop for two weeks and i STILL don't have it back. i would tell you how much it cost, but my 1 month warranty is covering it. i hope that's not your case, but that describes my problem to a tee!!! i hope you figure out what's wrong!!!
