Hey everyone,
How hard is it to change a timing belt on 99 zetec?
I have quiet a few miles on her now, and its time to be replaced, your help would greatfull.

pretty tough job, gonna need the right tools and probably some help.

What are 'a few miles'? Ford recommends replacement at 120,000 miles or 200,000 kms.
Also think of the tensioner and idler assy's....ya more parts more $$$$
Do the SEARCH thing, there has been very good advice on stuff...

Absolutely change the tensioner and idler pulleys.

BK - Steve and myself have had BAD run-ins with these pulleys seizing and causing the belt to go bad prematurely.

Heads up! To those wondering if their pulley/pulleys are on the way out, take off the top of the timing belt shroud, inspect the timing belt. If you see two grooves in it, you have probably removed the plastic cover on the pulley at best, at worst, you have a seized pulley. This was my problem on my car which sent me to get it fixed.

I can vouch for this myself. My timing belt was just replaced at the dealership and the idler pullies too. In fact, the timing belt had grooves worn into it by the pullies and was so cracked that it was in iminent danger of separating. This was at 190,000 km. I'm guessing that the idlers were partially seized, causing the premature wear as noted in the quoted post.

when I went to replace the belt on my car the tensioner pully was almost completely cracked in half, belt was fine and looked almost new.

Make sure you get all the pullies changed

My pulleys were shot at only 50K miles, while the belt itself was fresh as a daisy.

I have a friend at a parts store, and he said he could get me a timig belt kit for around $93.00, or just a belt for $26.00. \,,,,he orded them in so I could look at them, also the hanyse/or chilitons manual.

Last week I called Ford Canada and asked what the recommended interval was (nothing is listed in the manual), they said anywhere from 120km to 196km, so I spoke with my service rep - he stated 125km to 140km max. I had my timing belt and water pump and pullies replaced at 125km, at a cost of $600. Both the pump and belt were in phenomenal shape, pullies seemed okay too, looked like they could have lasted another 100km, and now I feel like I was ripped.


99 Sport SE - Zetec Mods: My wife vacuumed it last spring , my son wiped up his hot chocolate spill in December. My daughter found the tooth she lost last week .

Hmmm.. if the timing belt is fine.
And the pully looks bad is that something
you can do easy at home? Could I pull that
sucker off and back on without messing up
the timing belt?
