What exactly is an "exhaust pipe"?

perhaps I used the wrong term? I don't know...I'm not re-vamping the whole exhaust system (y-pipes and the like), just getting a new exhaust to boost me up a few HP and make some noise . thing about it is it requires welding, and I don't have the tools or skills to do this, so I was wondering if there was anyone worth going to or if I should just hit any old local shop

I think the guy is asking for info on where to take his car to a shop that'll remove the resonator {{{{EDIT: I just noticed that you didn't want to replace the resonator}}}} and put a glasspack or something like that on. If you went with a larger pipe, you'd probably have to remove the muffler all together *if you weren't going to mess with upgrading that*. I'm no exhaust expert, but you maybe asking for a whole cat-back to notice that little extra HP boost you're seeking. That backed with a good intake.

alright, either I'm not being clear or I'm a complete dumbass who doesn't know the first thing of what he's talking about (probably the latter)

ok...the larger pipe, the noise, the few extra HP...I really have no idea if I'm required to replace the muffler and remove the resonator and what-have-you. a friend of mine did his exhaust, spent like $50 on it...looks and sounds like [censored], even for a civic...I'm willing to shell out a bit more cash, but just wondering what to do and where to start I suppose...perhaps this should be in another section of the boards though, since it seems to be straying to a question-answer on exhausts...

You could put a larger pipe on your exhaust. The thing is just finding where to put it. If the main thing you are looking for is sound and want a cheap fix.. you could cut out the resonator and replace it with a straight pipe. Which should cost no more than $50. I've done some research on that very thing today, and from what I can tell, the sound is good once the engine is warm and you can't really tell an hp difference, atleast not by the SOTP.

If you have a Non-svt, You could have a pipe fabricated to lead from the back of the Cat, bent exactly like the stock pipe except no resonator or muffler. I don't know if you would be able to tell any difference in performance, but I'm sure it would sound more free. As for something to think about, you have backpressure in your 'tuned' stock exhaust system, if you open that up more freely, you might feel less power in that gruntier low rpms region.

I don't live up in MD, but down here in VA, you could have some one fabricate something for you. You may need to shop around, but most local shops I know could do it for you if you asked them.

ok, so basically, all these people with the huge exhaust pipes aren't really getting anything out of it? I'm guessing they must've gotten their resonators yanked out, but the all brag about the extra HP they picked up...most of them don't have the kind of cash to drop and get a full exhaust overhaul done, maybe I'm missing something? lemme see if I can find one of these puppies floating around on ebay really quick...

EDIT: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33636&item=2427468832

now, I'm not sure that I would go with something like this, seems kinda cheap...but get the general idea? I guess I'm a total newb to this, thought I knew more than I did

OK, lemme save you some confusion.

How much do you want to spend?

How willing are you to listen to the experienced voices? Because if you want a huge open exhaust for the looks, you're not really going to care for the answers.

I looked up your posts...you've got a '95 SE manual. What you really should look into is a catback SVT exhaust; you'll usually find a few available from SVT owners who upgraded to more open (for SVTs) setups. I got mine for about $100, and it's probably the second best (after brakes) mod I've done on my car. The pipes aren't huge or very loud, but they sound great, they look understated and cool, and like I said, it's not expensive.

Since you:
a) don't want to spend too much money
b) want increase in performance
c) want increase in quality sound

I would go with what Jeb recommended - SVT exhaust.

SVTFORME2 has an SVT exhaust with a Vibrant resonator welded in already. It sounds really good and should give you the look, sound and performance all for less than $150 or so.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll get in touch with him and let him know you want it.

alright, sounds great...as for sound, I don't need it to be deafening, or even very loud for that matter, but sound good, so when someone hears it they know something has been done, but mostly I was looking at the performance increase (gotta love fast cars)...SVT ST PETE, I'm down, go ahead and contact your people...my people will call your people...we'll talk cars...

anywho, back to the original question now that my confusion and ignorance is out of the way. Installation: does it really matter where I go? also, about how much would I be looking to spend on this installation, since I can't really do it myself...

thanks guys
