What about steps? I remember when I was a paperboy and a good number of homes had steps leading to the front door where the mailbox was. I don't know how the Segway can handle even a small flight of stairs.
Also, the big caveat to the Segway right now is the liability. Basically you're putting people on a moving, powered vehicle that can travel relatively fast. The more people use a Segway on the sidewalks, the more chance there is for collisions with pedestrians. Then again, people ride their bikes on sidewalks all the time, and life goes on, so who knows?

i thought i saw something somewhere that Bush fell over on one of those things.
thought i saw it here, but i could be wrong...usually i am.
The problem was that he forgot to turn it on They don't self-balance too well if they're turned off.

These things have been out-lawed in a several cities already (mostly in California) - more to come.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

The technology is migrating into wheelchairs, which is where it's really going to be amazing. I saw a thing on Dateline NBC last night about the prototype wheelchairs that normally rolled on four wheels but could balance on two, and in the process elevated the user to what we would consider a normal standing height. The balancing system was so good that one user caught a 25lb. weight tossed to him without toppling over, and he played catch with his kids.
