Can the lame factory stock HU play CD-R's???
Is there a special way of inserting the CDR so the HU will recognize and play it?
For me, sometimes it'll work and lots of time it doesn't. Does it help if COMP was turned off?
Gotta save up for a good aftermarket HU.

I think your description sums up everything. Most people on the list have problems with CD-R. The strange thing I found was that the same brands discs would work differently. One would play everytime. Another would error every time. Another was selective, one time it would three times it wouldn't. Take your own advice and get the new head unit.

I use Memorex CDR's and have no problems in my car (b4 the new stereo) or my girlfriends Escort. Burn your discs at no more than 4x speed and use MP3's recorded at 128 kbps or more (160 is best) and you should have little probs.

Lets face facts here. Sometimes the stock HU can't even play normal cds. Seriously though, some cd players won't play any cd-rs. My last Alpine deck wouldn't but my new one will, go figure.

I have noticed that in many cd-players Sony CD-Rs seem to work the best. Although even with those cds the stock HU has its problems. One thing I do know for sure is my Sony head unit is awful at playing CD-Rs. The only ones it doesn't skip with are Sony discs, go figure. So if you plan on buying a Sony HU and you make a lot of cds you better stock up on those Sony CD-Rs.

I've pretty much determined that CD-Rs are very eratic. My Sony is not supposed to play them but does without any issues. Others have had a lot of problems. I'm beginning to think that it is luck of the draw with both HUs and the media you use. I've tried just about everything.

Also, consider that the disc itself isn't always the problem. A great deal of compatibility(when using CD-R)is HOW you burn them to the disc. Look at burning software, there are quite a few variables involved in actually burning the disc. HOW it is burned often determines how compatible the disc is with various players. FYI.

Normally, I use toast for my mac but have used various programs to make discs at work. But I agree with your post. My Mac discs seem to be better accross the board. I'm sure there are other factors, too. Like the speed it was recorded at, the original source music, and the burner.

i have no problems with mine in other head units. it does have a lot to do with the media though. i have had the highest success rate with sony and memorex. but, i like to use audio extractor to get all the music on my hard drive so that i wont have a problem with scratches causing an error. its possible that this might have something to do with it. when i have the songs on my hd, i run them at 6x, but if they are mp3 or from a cd, 4x only. i have a mac too
