well, its rated at 100W, but the birth sheet shows it going up to 130W, so the amp is underrated, not like thats suprising from zapco...

Do you think i'm making a mistake running it at that power, or will it be fine?

I think it would be fine.

My brother has a Shiva with 125 watts per coil in an Escort. I can get very loud. They have similar sensitivity and excursion so you should see similar results. It would still be an improvement over the ID sub. The box requirements are 1-2 cubic feet. 1 cubic foot would work but would be boomier than the 2 cu. ft.. 2 Cubic feet would be your best bet for SQ, the 1 cubic foot for SPL. You can adjust the box size to get a compromise. If you want me to give you some info on ported boxes, I would be happy to model an enclosure and let you know what size. It'll end up bigger but again will give you some more SPL if that is what you are looking for.
To give you an idea, you will probably get 130 db instead of 133, just to give you a reference.

i was under the impression that an unported box would make for a more mellower and quieter sound, which is what i am going after.

Right/wrong?

Essentially, you are right. A sealed boxes sound tends to start rolling off earlier but has a shallower rolloff than a ported box.

So the short answer would be yes, you would want a sealed box, 1.5 cubic feet would be perfect if you have the space. 1.0 would work fine if you don't have the space.
