Sounds like you have an automatic Zetec, right? They all shudder somewhat at idle to one degree or another. A mechanic friend of mine tells me that they are very sensitive to having the right back pressure in the exhaust system and sometimes something as simple as replacing a holed muffler will partially alleviate the problem. I've seen this for myself on my own car. I thought it shuddered too much and replacing the muffler helped a lot. (see ride below).
As for the A/C thing...makes sense since you're putting more load on the engine when its on, thus making the shuddering problem worse. If it's squeaking (on AC that is) I would check your belts for wear and proper tension.

I doubt that's it, in fact I would say our engines aren't very sensitive to exhaust back pressure (other than changing your powerband) and it would have no affect on vibrations (my experience based on stock exhaust vs. straight pipe).
Check your motor mounts, all your pulleys and belts and the general condition of your fuel system, hoses, and spark plugs/wires.
