My Contour GL (1995 - bishop375's former ride) STILL has its stalling problem. This is what it does: Start the car, the idle sounds a little funny, put into gear (reverse OR drive), take foot off brake and poof - stall. It does this about once a week.

It used to do it VERY seldom, then the frequency increased, so we brought it to the mechanic. They originally could not find a problem, or even get it to stall out while they had it.

Recently (less then a few months ago), it finally threw a code - Neutral Switch. So we had that replaced....problem NOT solved. It stalled again and again, same routine.

Then about a week and a half ago, it stalled WHILE I had my foot on the gas and the car was moving. It again threw a code - Throttle Control Switch. We had that replaced. Problem still NOT solved.

Today, I drove my usual 4 miles to work (but I stopped on the way to buy stamps). I get back in the car to finish the ride to work, stalling routine all over again. Same story.

It seems to us that it does this "act" when it gets warmed up, then turned off, and started right back up again.

Does ANYone out there have ANY ideas?....because my mechanics seem to only be fixing non-existent problems.

Please help!

I just posted about something like this in a different thread like a minute ago My Sport sometimes has a problem where it will sputter and almost stall when its cold (after sitting for a long time). Changing the fuel filter fixes it for a short time, but it comes back. This makes me suspect a problem with the fuel delivery system; either the pump or the pump screen.

Unfortunately your symptoms are somewhat different than mine so I'm not sure if you're having the same problem. You might want to have the fuel system pressure-tested. I'm not sure of the numbers you should see on a normal system, but a simple search around the boards will turn that up.

Oh yeah - we also has the O2 sensor replaced in the process - another code that was thrown. Again, problem NOT solved.

Oh and about your thing. I don't know how many times i've said this (have you searched by the way... you probably should..) change the plugs, wires and then coil. My problem was the wires.

I was going to say that as well:

Change plugs and wires. IF problem persists try the coils.

If that doesn't work, get some injector cleaner (like STP or whatever) and dump it in the gas tank, run it through on 93 octane with that stuff and see if the problem STILL persists.

If that doesn't do it, replace the injectors.

Do all that and post back, I'm sure the stalling should go away. If it still does, and you said you've already changed the o2 sensor, then check the intake AREA see if anything is unplugged or accidentally knocked out (ACTUALLY, DO THAT FIRST, because your car will stall if the IAT or anything in the region is unplugged or loose).

That's when you post the same question to more than one forum on a board. Since many of us read the majority of the forums, and this is a troubleshooting issue, there's no need to post it anywhere but here. FYI, it was also posted to Duratec Maintenance.

If it is stalling after startup, check what everyone has posted here.

If it stalls when coming to a stop, it could be the Torque Converter not disengaging when you brake.
This could be as simple as replacing the brake switch.
Whenever you step on the brake, it sends a pulse to the PCM
to disengage the Torque Converter, if it is engaged.
If the switch is worn, it may not be sending this pulse.

It's definitely not the torque converter. I had that problem on a former car, and I know that one all too well.

Here, it stalls when put into gear, before the car even moves. Stopping (once I can actually get going) is okay.
