After about 2 years of troubleshooting, I finally found out why my car was dying overnight. It turns out the switch for the hood light was broken internally causing the light to stay on.

After finally getting the EVTM on CD, it became perfectly clear that I was looking in the wrong place for the switch. I just assumed it would be part of the hinge or something like that. Turns out it's the part in the front that I assumed was just some sort of hood support.

The Haynes manuals I have are pretty much a joke when it comes to wiring diagrams. I knew that if I removed fuse 34, I wouldn't have a dead battery the next morning. The haynes manuals don't even mention the hood light. The EVTM shows very plainly everything that goes to that fuse. I was getting tired of every day having to reset my radio stations. Now, I won't hav eto for a long while!

Just when I thought I might have to trade the 'styque in for something else. Now, I can spend my time doing mods.

Ah, the relief! I just hope someone else can benefit from my efforts.

Ford fixed that problem on the '99s by decontenting the underhood light.

Well, if you have the socket and no bulb, maybe there's a reason for it? Looking at the engine bay with the hood open, on the left-hand side (over by the windshield solvent container) there's a little switch that looks like a "hood bumper" on other cars. It has an accordion-type of cover on it. This is the hood switch.

I'd say just leave the bulb out. It's not like it really casts any usable light on the engine. Just make sure you have a flashlight handy if you drive it at night.

Actually it was deconted in 98. I have thought many times of adding one back.

I'll check when I get home from work, but I don't think I got that light or switch, and it's a '97 ...

Part of a specific options package maybe?
