Yup, that's why I'm getting so frustrated with it; I can't tell where exactly its coming from. On top of that, its very inconsistent. The last three times I drove my car it didn't make any noises. I checked the voltage from the battery yesterday, and its 14.5 with the car running; exactly where it should be.

I'm thinking maybe I should just let it go until something breaks. Then I'll just tow it home with AAA and swap out the broken part myself.

My alternator was broken in 3 pieces, yet it charged the battery like it was new.. But the noise was terrible! The new one went in this morning - it was a PITA to change, I was glad I didn't do it myself! Wasn't that glad to pay the bill though..

When mine went bad, it started as a whining noise, like a rusted wheel or something. Then after 4-5 minutes, it went completely silent - no more noise, everything sounded normal. Then after 2 days of normality, the grinding noise appeared, and stayed. Alternator housing was cracked parallel to the pulley, and 90 degrees to it too.

Hope you can find the culprit...
