Are you into scuba diving and fishing?

If so, then Belize is your Mecca, but it WILL cost you, unless you're going with a group. Mexico has better ruins and better prices on just about everything (even in some of the tourist traps like Mazatlan, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, etc.) However, Belize is tops in Central America for diving and the fishing is oustanding (I only know of one place better for fishing, and I'll burn in Hell before I give that location up). You pay for it, though.

If you're into the beach scene and taking it easy, go to Mexico and save yourself some money. Most places in Mexico (excluding some spots in the interior) are like taking a trip to South Beach in Miami, so I wouldn't worry about the language barrier.

Or, do what I do. Go to Costa Rica. I've been to a number of countries across 5 continents and I've yet to find a better place to visit. All I'm saying is that your money may be better spent in other places apart from Belize, depending on what you are looking for.

Heck, I've seen $300-400 airfares to Europe recently, so keep your options open...

If you're looking for some quiet, stunning spots to seriously get away from it all, I know of 5-6 in Mexico and about 2 dozen in Costa Rica. PM me if you're interested.

I'm trying, though my boss and sales team is about ready to skin me if I'm gone much more this year.

I've been out of the country 5 times in the last 2 years...

...and I've got two more trips (one back to Costa Rica in November and one to Austria in December) to go for the remainder of this one.

I'll be stuck taking my laptop and staying somewhat "plugged in" for these last two.

Trust me, if I could figure out how to make a good living by traveling, it would be a done deal.

If the reason you want to go to Belize is because it is an english speaking country and it is cheap, maybe you should re-evaluate this trip.

Sounds like all you really need is a couple nights in Tijuana...

Belize is nice, but it is so far down on my list of future travel destinations, I'll probably never get to it in my lifetime.

There was a "Wild On E!" show about Belize last night! You should check it out. Lots of nekkidness. If your girlfriend is into that, then definitely go. And take pictures!

Definitely go to Belize. That would have been where my honeymoon would have been if my friend didn't go their on his. I had to switch to Huatulco Mexico (which is also beautiful, less congested, and cheaper than the big resort destinations.)

If you are into culture and tradition, go to Huatulco and then take a day or two to visit Oaxaca. It is a tremendous place to visit.

I was there in 1991 on a business trip(!) Flew American Airlines out of Miami, stayed in Belize City in the Ramada Royal Reef Hotel, which was very nice. Most of my time was spent in the capital, Belmopan, which is about fifty miles west of Belize City (the capital was moved inland because hurricanes kept whacking Belize City). In '91, Belize City was a bit, uh, primitive looking, but quaint and safe to walk around in. Most tourists were, of course, going out to the reefs to go diving, and I didn't get to see any of those areas, as I was dressed in a suit lugging a briefcase between government buildings in Belmopan. At the time, they had uncovered ruins in the forests which they were considering opening up for tourism; not sure if that's been done yet. All in all, it seemed a nice place.

i say take a hot looking friend (that's a female of course ) and go have fun. there's nothing like traveling to new places especially outside of the country. i've only been to a different country once and it was West Virginia , but i plan on going to other countries, ie Italy, Mexico, Cayman Islands in Novemeber, and maybe even canada

There is nothing up here except beer and beaver...stay away.
