While replacing the TSS sensor on my ATX, I noticed that the tranny is resting heavily on the subframe. (It's distorted the lower edge of the tranny case slightly ) Can anyone suggest which motor mounts need to be changed, or should I just change all of them? (How many is that exactly??) TIA

This is the one that will probably raise your transmission off of the subframe, but if it is shot, the others probably are also. At least, that's what I found in mine.

The upper mount, which you can see easily see under the stock air intake and easier without, has a rubber bushing inside the mount. It only covers the underside of the mount. Then there are two roll resisters located under the tranny that connects the tranny to the subframe. If either or both of these resistors are worn, it will allow the tranny to sit lower then normal since the upper mount is dependent on the lower resisters for support. I rebuilt my lower resistors with Dow HV400 Polyurathane and they are hard as a rock! Since my warrenty on transmission repairs is covered for another 10K, which included new trans mounts, I cannot install them until the warrenty is over. I have since found that this was a good thing!

Thanks for all the input guys! I'll check out the mounts and buy a set along with some polyurethane.

bentleywarren what symptons did you notice that indicated the need to change mounts other than visually seeing parts touching or leaning on each other?

I had a lot of vibration that I could not eliminate. Some of it seemed to be associated with the engine. In particular, I had a vibration under heavy acceleration. I could feel it through the wheel, floor pan, pedals, etc. Since I had already replaced struts, ball joints, cv/axles, and rotors, new tires, and tire balancing, there wasn't much left to replace. At first I replaced the two roll resistors, which helped a lot. I later replaced the two remaining mounts. It helped tremendously. I now have a very slight vibration, which seems to be tire/wheel related.

what was the cost of these replacements
AAMCO estimated $750 to replace the four mounts. I have learned that a lot of the suspension and drive train components have to be taken apart and then replaced when performing this job. I have read that sometimes after the mounts have been replaced shops like AAMCO have problems realigning the drive train and suspension components that they took apart which can cause the CV joint and bearings to wear more quickly. So when I do have all of the mounts replaced I am leaning towards having Ford do this work figuring that they would know how to properly align the components that must be dismantled during the mounts replacements.

I bought the mounts online. The last two mounts together were about $200. I think one was about $110, and one was about $90. The two roll resistors were cheaper, I think around $50-75 each. However, I think the price varies, dependong on the year model, engine, and transmission.
There's nothing to remove, other than the mounts themselves. At least, that's how it is with the zetec mtx. If you remove and replace one mount at a time, you probably won't have much of a problem with alignment. If you should remove all four at one time (although I don't know why you would do this), you could have a major alignment problem. Ford has a special tool to help align the front roll resistor, and once it is locked into place, the other mounts are fairly easy.

Hi Everyone, There is much less expensive replacements available..Check out www.rockauto.com. You can buy the rubber inserts for the front and back ones for $20 each. Just remove the part with the round iron circle and replace the guts inside and reinstall. Works great. The other 2 units are replaced in whole but are sure more reasonable that what is listed previously in this thread...Duane Koss/Blue Springs, Mo...
