Hello All,
I have a '95 Contour GL with 136K miles on it. For the past 2 months it's been bucking. The car has recently had a tune-up (replaced the wires and plugs), and the O2 sensor and speed sensor replaced. When hooked up to the computer , the computer still reads "trnasmission range sensor ckt high." The other code is 461 "
Code definition not available" Does anyone know what that is? Someone told me that this engine is particular with plugs. Is that true? Need help, great car, but annoying problem. Thanks.

seems like stock plugs and wires help a lot from what I'm reading.

Also check your throttle position sensor (if autos have that.... ??)

From your description and the fault code you mentioned your 'bucking' may be caused by the tranny slipping and grabbing. If you have a tach, check if the RPMs climb and suddenly drop when the car bucks. Be careful with this as it's really hard on your tranny and engine mounts! The range sensor is a $35 part at most dealers and is locatated on the top of the tranny. About a 45 minute repair on the V6 which involves draining the cooling system and disconnecting several hoses. Not sure about the Zetec??

Check this thread which has a pic of the tranny and sensor:

Yes, the ATXs have the standard TPS.

As stated above if, your RPMs are not rising/falling to produce the "bucking" then the plugs are likely at fault.

The sensor & plugs are not terribly expensive, so these are a good course of action to look into. The plugs to use are the stock Motorcraft plugs from your dealer & be CERTAIN that the plug wires are hooked up to the correct plug. For the wire locations, pick up a Haynes manual if you don't already have one. Haynes is a good source of basic info for the 'do-it-yourself'er.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

"Someone told me that this engine is particular with plugs. Is that true?"

Wow, this is the understatement of the year. "Particular"?, well SORT OF.

Have you solved your problem? If so, what was the solution?

Thanks,
