I believe Premium Sound in 2000 SVTs is a no-cost option. Might as well be, that's how much it's really worth...

The only stereo options for the SVT's is "premium" with cassette, and "premium" with cd. The non-premium (standard on non-svt's) and premium (optional on non-svt's and standard on svt's) spec's are as follows:

Non-premium:
-POS head unit (cd or tape) with internal amp (probably between 10-20 watts rms with high% THD)
-POS 20watt speakers

Premium:
-POS head unit (cd or tape) without internal amp
-POS external amplifier with 20 watts rms at slightly lower% THD than internal amp
-POS 20watt speakers, same as non-premium

Easiest way to upgrade to better sound is to get a decent aftermarket head unit and bypass the factory amp (Pioneer cd decks can be had for <$200 online). This will give you noticably better sound quality, even with the factory speakers. Want more? Upgrade to some decent aftermarket 5x7 or 6x8 speakers. Even more? Add a 2 or 4 channel amp (good quality) and perhaps a set of 6.5" components up front. Still not enough? Add a sub. Hope this helps

Whoop - that's a "maybe". I looked at the speakers in my SVT, and the ones from our '96, and they are not the same.

The '96 had paper cones, the SVT has polypropylene cones. Both are of the "whizzer cone" variety. Both use a plastic "basket" for the frame. The SVT speakers sound a lot better than the paper cone ones.

You'd still get much better sound with even a modest upgrade to the head unit, bypassing the amp, as Steve says, IMHO. For me, the factory system is OK, I rarely use it.

I think in 98 or 99 they may have switched to just one style (the poly's). Don't really remember right now if they did or not. I remember the 98+ speakers are all rated for the same wattage, though.
