I found a light tap with a small hammer at the right moment got me across the goal line.
The "trick" was to not insert the first end all the way until both ends were at least started into the holes. Then I'd tap them in lightly.
After much swearing, of course.
Do the brake shops have a special tool for this kind of thing?
