Just removed the UIM to change the plugs and wires... HOLY CRAP! I've removed the manifolds a few times before and it's been sorta gunky, but this time the carbon build up is insane! I think I just found out where my power has been going lately.

Question here is: What would have made this happen?

Excessive carbon in the EGR passages seems to be from running rich, which is what happens as the O2's start to go.

Oil blowby gets worse as the miles pile up and is sucked in through the PCV valve. Fresh oil keeps blowby to a minimum. If the PCV valve starts sticking it's even worse.

In a new engine there is only a small amount of reversion of the intake airflow, so little fuel makes it from the cylinder back up through the secondary valve to gunk up the secondary butterfly (remember the injector puts fuel in the primary runner right before the valve).

As the engine ages there is more intake flow reversal durring overlap. This causes increased gunking of the secondaries, and can cause moosing to start somewhere between 50,000 to 80,000 miles.

The exact cause of increased intake flow reverse pulses has not really been explained to my knowledge. If your CAT's are beginning to restrict the exhaust flow that might have something to do with it.

Your apparent IMRC problems are no doubt contributing also.

Wow. Yeah, that's a pretty technical explanation. The motor has about 95K on it too, so maybe thats part of it. Will any type of cleaner loosen this stuff easily?

Go easy on the "search" flaming please.

I clean the UIM by scraping the EGR passages first and then I take it to the carwash and blow the crap out of the runners.

B-12 CHEMTOOL® CARBURETOR CHOKE CLEANER works well on the LIM. If you do it on the car be forewarned, cleaner will get into the cylinders. Remove the feul pump relay and crank the engine to get most of it out before you try to start the engine. Put the relay in and start the engine. lots of smoke will come out of the exhaust. Then change the oil.

If you take the LIM off you won't have this problem but you should get injector O-rings and LIM gaskets in addition to the UIM, TB, and IAC gaskets.
