They only changed the original recommended fluid spec for US vehicles. (Yes screw the home crowd!)
It has always been a 75W90 synth gear oil in the European cars. (Matter of fact that's what BAT has always sold too by no coincidence!)

I'm sure Ford wanted to "appease" the majority of the buying population (I.E a bunch of worthless sheep, but that's another story!) and use an ATF based fluid to keep the shifting feel easy in all weather and their pocket book fully lined (ATF is a hell of a lot cheaper than Synth gear oil!)
Too bad it back fired with such high warranty claims which likely were caused by the asinine fluid choice!
(The typical Ford vicious circle - cut costs by making an excellent product inferior only to have 5 times as many failures )
