I was planning on doing the tranny cocktail, but someone in the car repair business told me that I should not. He told me that since the fluid has probably never been changed that changing it now (72,000mi) may cause the gears to "slip" or damage or something like that. Will damage or "slippage" occur if I still decide to change the fluid?
Thanks

That person in the car business is referring to Automatic transmissions where they have bands in them. If you don't properly maintain an auto tranny, then it's best to let the fluid sludge up and keep it in there till it blows.

I second this, it will do only good if you change the fluid. I've changed mines somewhere between 60k and 70k for the first time, and it definitely helped a lot.

I've changed mine 3 times in 3 years. (1k, 16k, 31k)
Transmission shifts like a top even when banging gears above 7500 rpm.
I'd recommend using Redline MTL.

I second the Redline MTL. Demon told me about it a few months ago...and i must say, it shifts better on cold starts and even better when its warm than the cocktail.

One last thing, now I hear when you're getting a little grinding its best not to switch to the cocktail. What's the best fluid combination to use (swap in)when I want a smooth shifter and when a small grind is occuring infrequently? i.e. Reg ATF + F.Modifier, Synthetic only, etc...
Thanks

If you want to use a dino fluid then get some ATF+3 Just remember to change it every year.
Also if your fluid is old it could be causing the grinding. (lack of syncro oiling for example)
I would try the Redline MTL.

What mixture though, all Redline MTL? Or half and half? Or a little MTL and more ATF +3?

If you are going to use the Redline use it 100%.
Mixing synthetic oil with dino oil is simply wasting money.
