Bang for the buck, the Fuji sounds like a better choice anyway. 12 megapixels!? At maximum res that'll chew up memory like no tomorrow!!! Wow!
At max res I eat up 3-4MB per picture as it is with mine...
The F717 is bulkier than most, but the reason behind that is one HELL of a lens (Zeiss, to be precise). You can have the fanciest CCD chip and whiz-bang features on a camera; if you don't have a relatively fast and hi-quality lens, then it's all for nothing.
The bulk doesn't bother me and if you've ever used any type of SLR in the past, then you find yourself pretty comfortable with the design. I've had no complaints, though if you're looking for compactness, then definitely find another camera.
