Figured I'd post here since ya'll are most knowledgeable about this stuff. I wired a switch to turn my indiglo gauges on and off into the ground wire. I know most things say do it on the hot wire, but this works so...please tell me what the possible bad results could be off this or are there none? I'd figured it be ok, since either way you're just interuppting the circuit. I'm planning on running underbody neons onto the same switch/ground eventually.

What could happen is that if anywhere on the hot +12V wire and that switch frays it can possibly go to ground and short out. Perhaps causing a fire. Re-wire it the proper way. Yes it will work the way you have it, but it is dangerous.

will everything is fused and i don't think anything is gonna even come close to fraying and shorting out. Thanks for the advice though.

Just as Lardy said...the reason that you are supposed to break the circuit on the hot wire is so that you are sure you are cutting the power to the device. The way you have it now, the circuit could find another ground and become active. Only risk here is that if it did find another ground, it could spark and possibly start a fire. I'd rewire it if I were you.

FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! BAD! BAD! BAD!....simply don't risk it. Keep the hot wire fused and have the switch on it.

Even if you switched the "hot" lead the wire could still fray and short out somewhere...i don't see the difference. But if you fuse it you should be safe.

It's fused, if it did some how find a ground (it's not going to) then it would either just turn on or the fuse would blow. Now maybe if this was the a higher power stereo system it'd be different,,, but I'm pretty sure have the ground switched will be OK, I guess time will tell.
