Hunters are usually the best land conservationists/environmentalists out there, despite what a bunch of "greenies" usually try to claim...
If the land and game go away, there's nothing to hunt, right?
Oh, and the whole "morality" BS about hunting? It's MUCH more painless and humane than pushing creatures through a meat packing plant...

I used to work across the street from a veal processing plant. Every few days a truck would drive past and turn into the parking lot and you could hear the "moos" from the calves. They'd get herded into the dock, and a little while later you could smell the meat being processed... bleh... If the wind was right I would have to skip lunch on certain days.
Then one day I made the mistake of asking my boss about the place. He told me he had been in there and he got to see the slaughtering process, which involves a huge metal spike driven into the immobilized head of the calf. How that's more humane or moral than a bullet through the heart I don't know. At least the deer has the chance to run.
Beer is my Gatorade.

One of my customers in another life: http://www.excelmeats.com/I've never been inside a packing plant, but I've heard enough about them that I'd rather wade through a pit of snakes rather than see what's inside...

Faze Away, are you a veggie delight pizza kind of person? Do you like soy? Does leading hundreds of cows into a dark hallway and smashing thier skulls bother you too? I call it I want a hamburger, kill me a cow. Deal with it. If someone wants to go kill a deer, make deer sausage (yum) and stick it's head on his wall, good for him. It's not like he's going to be poaching (Poachers can all eat my sack, it's disgusting having to haul a deer's rotting headless body away wfter sitting for a week, that could have been great Sausage!) It's all controlled so that we don't kill all of them, and it's even sometimes necessary so they don't end up walking around on the freeway because the population has risen too high and they have nowhere else to go, or worse, they are all starving. When a deer is in my sights and has developped the intelligence and self conciousness to look at me and say "Please don't point that gun at me" I'll put the gun down. Until then, I'll keep making them food. Just because we don't hunt with spears anymore doesn't mean it's not hunting, it's just like watching TV with a remote, just because I don't have to get up to change the channel doesn't mean I'm not watching TV

Update: Just got back from the range and fired my new rifle for the first time. First impression was HOLY SHAT!! this mugs powerful. Last year I went to a range and shot about 35 rounds total using a 30-30 and a 308 and I must say, my shoulder hurt pretty bad. Well today I shot 11 rounds with my 30-06 and I simply couldn't fire it again. my shoulder is toast The only thing that sucked was the rifle section was closed so I had to shoot in the handgun range and it was a pretty short distance. My first few shots were alittle low but they were all grouped very close. Once I noticed I was low I aimed just slightly higher and hit 2 out of 3 were very close to the X. All in all I was very impressed with the accuracy and feel of the gun. The action is sooooo smooth and effortless. Oh BTW I shot standing up with no supports or bench. Here's a pic of the target.

Not bad shooting, you will want to sight it in at 100 yards before hunting season though. If you sight in your 30-06 at 100 yards to where it is hitting about 2 inches high you will be sighted in to hit anything from 25 to about 200 yards without changing point of aim. If the recoil is bothering you, get a pachmayr decelerator pad. I put one on my 308 but that is because my normal day at the range is usually something like 100 rounds. While we are on the subject of hunting, wild game is A: better for you, being as it isn't grown on grain while not being allowed excersize which = more fat, B: if you use a reliable meat processor they will most likely handle the meat better than a large meat packing plant. Just make sure that you learn the weapon that you are using and if you haven't tried it at the range your game is at DONOT take the shot. It is our duty as hunters to make sure that we don't give any ammo to PETA or the anti gun wackos. Remember that good shot placement will kill and it doesn't matter if you use a $200 dollar rifle or a $7000 custom built rifle, if you don't learn to shoot the gun you will be chasing wounded animals and losing a few as well.

Fingas, Thx for the info. I'll take your advice and sight it in from 100 yards next time I go to the range and hopefully I'll be all set. The funny thing regarding the recoil is that this gun already has a supportive pad on the back but it still hurt pretty bad after just a few shots. Can the pad your talking about be put over the one my gun already has, and where can I get one? Thx.

I got mine from Natchez shooters supply. I'm not sure what your current butt pad is like but pachmayr makes alot of different recoil reducers and handgun grips. The new lightweight Taurus revolvers come with pachmayr grips that take alot of bite out of the lightness of the gun. When i changed out my butt pad the recoil went from being a sharp kick to my sholder to being a more prolonged push which doesn't hurt as much. You won't be shooting much on a hunting trip but as i said before there is no substitute for practice and if you make practice hurt less then you won't develop a flinch. The pad i am talking about will replace the current one or they also make a slip on if i am not mistaken. If i get a chance later i will try to find a link for you to the specific one for your gun if they make it. If they don't make one for your specific rifle they do make some that can be cut to fit. Hope all of this helps you.
