i mount mine pretty much in the middle of my windshield, below my rear view mirror. i want my rador detector to have as much visability out the rear window as possible. it might be a little obstructing to the driver, but it pays not to get caught.

I have a vynl(sp) strip on my windshield and w as wondering if that would affect the radar detector? would I have to mount it below the strip? if so I would have to mount mine on the bottom of my windshield or in another location

A useless one.
I have my V1 mounted *above* the rear-view for best range and it clearly sees out the rear window. I've even tested the rear-laser eye with a strong infared remote. I'll take pics if anyone cares to see the setup. The concealed display is mounted at an angle in the lower-left part of the instrument cluster (doesn't look the best there) which somewhat covers the 'low coolant' light, though it's still visible at startup or if that light were to turn on. Everything is wired perm and set to turn on in the "ON" position only.

we bought my dad a v1 for his birthday. let me just say that this is the sweetest detector on the market. wow it is amazing. this thing gets signals from very far away. i used it to bring my svt home from dallas and it would give me a beep and i wouldnt see a cop for a couple of min. i love how it also tells you how many signals it gets and wear the signals are coming from. i think i am going to have to buy my own, or steal his when i go back to school.

Got a Whistler for like over 6 years now and hardly plug it in (this sh@it is really useless, unless the cop's radar is in continuous mode. If the cop pulses you, seeing that u r speeding, then you will get a warning signal exactly a faction of a second after your speed was recorded). ... and yes, I have it mounted on the center of the dash. Looks stupid, but as I said I don't really care... If I ever decide on doing something about it, I would save for the in-dash one.

$100??? Dont waste your time!! Those cheap ones are worthless! Most of them will only beep once after the cop has already gotten you. They dont give you any advanced warning, you'd be better off just looking with your own eyes. If you want one, get a good one- Escort Passport 8500, bel 980. These are priced around $300, but well worth the money with much, much longer range.
