I have the 'plain' factory cassette installed and want to upgrade to a premium setup which I got a good deal on. What changes must be made to do this? My current system has some sort of an amp installed and I'll replace it with the premium one. My cassette HU will be replaced by the premium CD unit. I don't want to purchase any expensive wiring harnesses if I don't have to, but if I do, where can I get them and what's the cost? Does anyone have a wiring harness scheme for the premium setup? I already have one for the current setup.

Whoa, your system has an external amp? Like behind the glovebox? Because if ti does, you already have the premium system, as far as I know.

Or do you mean an aftermarket amp was installed with the factory cassette?

Inquiring minds want to know

The external amp was already there. So this is the premium cassette system? I was under the impression that the premium system had lettering on the speaker housing to indicate that. Perhaps I'm incorrect. So, what you're saying is that a "premium" cd player should hook right into the amp (with the included adapter)?

Just pull out your deck. I bet you have all the right hook ups for the CD player already. I did this exact swap in my sisters Explorer.

In light of all this...thanks. I'll try when the ship comes in. :-)

Is it possible to by-pass the factory amp and use another 4-channel amp (I actually have an old sony 4x40 amp in a closet somewhere). Keep in mind that I still have the factory HU and speakers.

The writing on the door panels over the speakers don't mean squat. Mine say "stereo" yet I have premium sound. However, you say you are using a Ford CD HU, right? Do a search on the forums and notice how many people have ditched the factory HU for an aftermaket piece. Seriously an aftermaket amp downstream from a factory HU is NOT a good idea. Plus, even the cheapest HU's from Crutchfield with decent power (15 watts RMS) will smoke the factory setup. It'll be the best $150 you've ever spent. I cannot stress enough how bad the factory CD player is; Kraco makes better sound.

If you do use a new HU then bypassing the amp is no problem, Crutchfield has everything you need ($15, free with a new HU; two days to your door). In the case of an aftermarket amp, just use the Crutchfield wiring harness to tie into the factory speaker harness and make the connection (input/output to the new amp) into the Crutchfield wires.

The hardest part of installing a new HU and bypassing the amp is fishing the Crutchfield harness through the back of the console to the new head unit--and even it is not that bad. Total time is less than an hour with proper tools (DIN) and very close attention to the wiring schematic.

Time and complication are not really an issue. I have done some pretty complicated installs in the past...the contour is pretty simple to work with. I know it won't take long to get done what needs to get done. I'm basically not spending any money, and want to get the best sound out of what I have. I need to sell my truck before I can actually put money into my system. The addition of the CD HU was for my parents...the amp question was for my ride...two different issues. Sorry for confusion.
