I finally installed my first amp and it does ok, but turns off after about 20 min then come back on in about 5 min. I'm not sure how to fix it so I came to you guys for help. The amp also gets really hot, I dont think its supposed to do that. Its a mtx thunder 2160 I got used of ebay. I have it laying next to my 10" bandpass sub box. Should I mount it different? Also its grounded to a bolt and nut I put in a hole in the rear deck. I sanded it the best I could with a filer and knife, I'm going to get some sandpaper and sand some more today. It also might be the main fuse at the battery. When I was installing the power wire I tighten the fuse holder too tight, and the glass on the fuse broke. The metal on the inside was fine, so I went ahead and used it. Could that be causing the overheating? It was a 8ga wire kit from knukonceptz, what kind of fuse from autozone would replace that?

The writing on the amp is faded so I can tell what each knob does. I had the both at halfway, but you barely heard it in the cabin, and it still would cut off. I turned it up and now you hear it, but it will cut out when its hot. There's a push button that says x-over and I have it on but I dont know if it works. I also cut the bass to the nonfading out on my hu at 80mhz and turned the nf lvl up to about +5 so I could keep the gain and bass boost on the amp lower. Should I set it up different.

I tried to give you as much info as I can, so you'd be able to pinpoint the problem better. Tell me what you think is wrong.

I just read many reviews on this amp. Almost every one says that the weaknesses is it over heats more then enough. Make sure it is very well vented. Oh and is the "Protection" LED comming on when the amp cuts off? I think that it is just overheating . The two-channel design is rated at 80 watts per channel into four-ohm speaker loads, power output doubling when impedance is halved. Use it in bridged mode and you get 320 watts on tap. What gauge wiring are you using also???

I'm using 8 guage wiring, and I have it bridged powering the 10". I think its overheating as well, becuase at night it takes a lot longer before it shuts off. It's pretty annoying and embarassing when other people are in the car. The reason I got this amp was so that when I upgrade again I can use it to power my front speakers, but that wont be for atleast a year. Turning the gain down low helps a little, but then you barely hear the sub and that makes the setup pointless

Whats your 10? DVC? How many ohm????
Thats 99% the main reason amps overheat.. That and gain set too high
