Today at 4:30 I started changing my plugs and wires...the ones that were on the car when it was "born", with motorcraft fine-wire single platinum and FMS 9mm wires. Well it took me a little more than an hour and a half to do the swap...using a dremel to make the looms bigger and putting dielectric grease on all the contacts. So I start up the car, and its missing and running like [censored]. I checked to make sure of anything obvious....wires in the right places, going to the right places, spark plugs torqued down properly, all the gaps were right (.054). Everything was good. So I systematically took one FMS wire out, replaced it with a stock wire, ran the car, turned the car off, put the FMS wire back and went to the next cylinder to check if a wire was bad. None were. Did the same with the plugs. All were fine. Took the coil pack off and examined it for damage. Fine. Replaced all of the FMS wires and new platinum plugs with the old stuff. Still runs like crap (misfiring, shaking, smells like raw fuel) Well its been 7.5 hours since I started working on the car, I am totally out of ideas.....can anyone please help me out here before I go to the Stealership

It can be very easy to accidently mix up the plug wire routing. It happened to me on my own car when I changed the plugs for the first time. I had accidently swapped the 1 and 3 wires. Others have posted that they have done the same thing. With a little bit of a search you should fid a recent post that provides the correct plug wire routing.
By the way, I spent about 15 years of my life as a tune up mechanic and seldom had this problem. If I can make this mistake, then anyone can.

The "diagram" on the coil pack indicating which plug order is not the same as the order they go in the heads.
This is from the haynes manual as best I can reproduce it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FIREWALL
---------
|4 6 5|
|3 2 1| <------- Coil pack
---------
-------------
| 1 2 3 |
| | <---------- Cylinders
| 4 5 6 |
-------------
RADIATOR
I made the mistake of assuming the coil pack diagram was the same as the cylinder layout. It wasn't pretty.
-edit- That came out all messed up but I think you should get the idea.
Excellent advise! I used a blue 'Sharpie' to lable the wires before getting started. I always try to change/replace one at a time, although that isn't always convienent during a wire swap.
Hmm... Looks familiar.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
Sounds like crossed wires.. I did that mistake last year when I changed plugs and wires at the same time.. Same mistake as mentioned above: assumed coil pack outputs were sequential..
God I feel so stupid now! I assumed that the cylinder layout was the same as the coilpack layout and reversed the 1 and 3 wires....For a whole night I was worrying about the car and probably couldn't have even popped a phat boner if my life depended on it because of the SVT crisis. haha well I'm just kidding but yeah much relieved that its not something expensive
Thanks a lot for helping me out
welcome to the club, I became a member last year. Like big Jim said, even the pros do it. Be on the watch for cat problems, the raw fuel being dumped into the exhaust can cause problems down the road. Also change your oil right away just to be safe.
MarkO-where do you live? You just saved my ass!!! Holy crap! I changed my wires today, threw 3 CELs! Cylinders 2, 5, and 6 IIRC were misfiring. I gotta wait till it cools off and I'm gonna give it another shot. Dude, muy thankos.
It sounds like FastFordFreak did the exact same thing as me! Hot dog, I'm finally gonna get to drive a real car for the first time in 2 weeks!!!
