Had my car in the other day for CEL exploratory diagnostic surgery (another story...)

it sounds awesome when you're just driving around at 5k, the rev's are soo smooth. . .it's like butta. . .

on a more technical note, I was wonderiing if there was a way to counterbalance the crankshaft (better weighted cams or something) so that our car WOULDN'T need a damper(DMD as applicable at all, like the Prosche GT3?

With such a small engine, it seems like it should be possible, right??

As I understand it...(big disclaimer, here)

The DMD dampens harmonics. There is no way to "balance" crank harmonics, per se.

Balancers solve a different problem, which is vibration caused by an inherently out-of-balance system, like an inline 4.

EXACTLY!! Our V6 is inherently out of balance, is an inline 6 out of balance or are the harmonics better there?? And, I would venture to guess that there should be a way to counterbalance the entire mechanism so that vibrations are null. . .it would take far more R&D Ford could afford, but I was just saying, maybe the duratec v6 could be "reblanced" by some measure of changing the weight of the pistons, rob length, etc. . .I'm WAYYYY out of my league here, but as conjecture, I'm curious if any of the engineers and tech gurus here have an input. . .

Inline 6's are the MOST balanced of all engine configurations. With V8's being one of the most unbalanced.

This is calculated through a coreolis effect calculation.

There's nothing you can do to change that.

The best route to take with this engine...if you're really concerned about high performance longevity, is to take it to your local speed shop and have it balanced and blue printed, to insure that the inherant resonance problem isn't complicated by rods/piston assemblies/crankshaft that is not balanced with each other. I'm sure that build quality and specification ranges are much tighter now than earlier Detroit...but the bottom line is...any mass produced piece falls within a range of manufacturer specifications.

Then combine the DMD with a lightened flywheel to regain the stocker's quick revving nature. You be a happy camper...

I do not notice any slowing in rev spool up, in fact it seems faster between 4k and redline. The weight difference between the 2 seemed negligeable. I think the performance loss is all heresay.

yeah, I was thinking about getting her blueprinted prior to installing the turbo next yearish, maybe take her up to 2.7L. . .get some low CR pistons, nice forged con-rods, but I don't know whether to blow up the engine first AND THEN do it or vice versa. . .she's running strong at 51k, I haven't had the compression tested, but. . .thanks Staz for the info, I figured inlines were the best, and now I understand why V8's feel so "unsmooth" to me, at least Ford ones. . .the mercedes v8's seem nicely balanced. . .

Just a note that while this can't be changed only "countered" once the design is set, IIRC, it can be changed at the time of design.

The unbalance characteristics of any V (4,6,8,10,etc.) can be adjusted somewhat by the angle of the V (60 degrees, 90 degrees, etc.). I believe this deals with primary balance and not secondary but maybe I've got that reversed - too much drugs in my system right now.
