I bypasses the amp completely! I comes with very long wires. I originally used mine to do what you want to do(go to HU). I just bundled up the excess wire! I now have the harness running into an external amp in the trunk. I really can't remember what the cost was, but I know it was under $20! You can call Crutchfied at 888-955-6000.
