My computer would be for school, so it would be used for a lot of things. Internet, assorted programs, maybe video editing, maybe CAD, probably games. I want a reliable, but fast processor. I don't really care between AMD and Intel for preference. I have a AMD in my current computer and it has been rock solid. I just want a processor that will take anything I throw at it with no problem.

Close your eyes spin around three times and point to one of them and whatever one you point to just pick that one. The likelyhood that one would be that much better than the other is very slim so I would just pick either one at ramdom.

For the type of workload you are doing on your PC, I seriously doubt you will notice ANY difference between either chip...

I'd be more concerned on which chip architecture has the highest bus bandwidth and memory bandwidth associated with it and the motherboard, as those are the usual "choke" points in PC's (excluding disk I/O in this discussion), but that's just me.

With Intel's latest offerings, I'd probably go with them. If your a little light on cash, then AMD would be a solid choice, as we are probably talking differences in milliseconds on which architecture executes instructions faster than the other...

it's a bit of a bigger differance than you think... I have a 2.8 pentium 4 system I built for a guy at work and it can run circles around my athlon running at 2.26ghz in amd's PR rating that's supose to be a 3200+ a 45 minute avi on my sistem with 512mb of ddr333 takes about 48 minutes to encode to a SVCD mpeg and on the pentium with 512mb or 800mhz rambus it finishes it in under 30 minutes.

you can get a 2.8 pentium for about $280 and a 3200+ athlon for about $479

This may be where the higher memory bandwidth and backplane throughput are helping out, though I suspect that AVI encoding is more of a number-crunching excercise than anything else, so the processor comparison is probably not too far off-base.

I'll wager I stand corrected here.

All it takes is a cpu fan failure and the AMD is toast, they run so very hot. Intel cpu's have a thermal shutdown feature that AMD has not duplicated yet. That puts me in the Intel camp.

That aside, the AMD is the bigger bang for buck.

I have never run an AMD without some aftermarket cooling solution, so right there any price difference you would have had between the Intel and AMD chips goes out the window. Lance pointed out the thermal protection built into the P4 that on its own is worth the extra cash. The fans on the intels are very quiet, and do a great job.

Most modern AMD motherboards have thermal protection built in. If the fan fails the system shuts down.

What kind of cooling are you buying....gold plated?
I'm running a $5.99 heatsink and fan on my $87.00 XP2100 overclocked to 2.2 ghz. CPU temp is 38c after 3 hours of gaming. Heat can be a problem if you overclock but but not at stock speed's in my experience.

It's expensive to buy on the cutting edge of technology. A top of the line AMD XP3200 $439 and the top dog for Intel is the P4 3.2 ghz at $669. For that extra $220 you can get your self a damn good video card and extra memory. Or you could step down so to speak to an XP2800 for $164 and save your self even more cash to upgrade other parts of your system. Yes I am an AMD man but for good reason. Memory and motherboards for Pentium's are more expensive also.

I have always been an Intel fan personally. I like the rock solid stability often offered by intel.
