How can I tell if I have one of these problematic trannies? I have a '99 Contour with ATX. Would that mean I have a CD4e are are there others that mine could be mated to the Duratec?

All automatic Contours/Mystiques came with the CD4E attached.

As for what other models can safely mate with the Duratec... well, that has yet to be discussed, but I do know that all early model LS's had the option of the ATX with Shift Tronic (or whatever it is called) technology, which was mated to the 3 liter duratecs.

That would of course not be a direct replacement though. There are some serious electrical issues to overcome first though. Other then that... there is really nothing else.

Try putting the fans in BEFORE you put in the Radiator.
Then bolt everything together...

I am glad that mercman has found the problem that plagued my first TWO CD4E transaxles.
What is bad is that FORD doesn't even recognize that there is a f**king problem with their own POS CD4E.

With all of this info available, you'd think that NHTSA would have recalled them already.

I think it is time we teamed together and looked for some serious counseling.
We need to know what we are and aren't entitled to.
We had nothing to do with the design of this CD4E, and there is nothing
we could possibly do to stop this from happening.
Ther has to be some type of recourse that we can take against FORD for producing a product with a defective design.

I have 99,xxx miles as of today. No probs yet. I drive very hard two hours round trip each day. Lots of stop and go, rush hour, stop lights and hi reving, even manual shifting. I chainged fluid around 60k and around 90k (never been flushed). Haven't seen the problem at all yet although I think it's always kinda punch-shifted a little bit out of some gears when letting off throttle sharply.

Something tells me it won't be long before I'll start getting blinking lights or slipping or something. My fluid has never been ugly or smelly. Could I be the chosen one? My current plan is to drive the contour for two more years. At that rate, it will have over 150k. I don't plan on changing jobs so I will continue to drive over 10 hours per week. St. Louis traffic is usually either 80mph or stand-still stop and go. This will be interesting! Thanks for the info.

Update: I now have over 113k and no probs at all (except for check engine light CEL OBD-II 0420, but that is related to cats and O2 sensor, not tranny. Keep-a-pray'n.
