Is there a speedo cable? I wonder if it may have broken. Doesn't it connect to the transmission somewhere? I'm really not sure on that........

I think 95s are the only ones with mechanical speedo cables. Probably a loose connector, but maybe a fuse. The speedo will probably have to work for the cruise to work. Possible VSS sensor or connection but thats just a wag.

You won't have a cable on a 96. Instead, it will be electronic. Your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) may have died. It is a small plastic device, maybe an inch in diameter, maybe an inch long, with a few small electric wires emerging from it. It is mounted at the back of the transmission, toward the firewall, down low. The VSS sends a signal to the speedometer, and also to the cruise control.

Well if u got a 96 zetec auto. then u got two sensors the one by the speedometer and the one by the transmission. If the on by the transmission was not working u would not be able two drive your car. Because it would not change gears on your tranny, would not read miles. I had the one sensor by the tranny come off n was a pain to locate. Had to got to ford n was shown the two sensors.

It's accessible if you jack up the car. I won't say it's easily accessible, but then nothing is easily accessible on our cars. You just have to reach through, around, and over a few obstacles, but it can be done without a great deal of trouble. I don't remember the exact cost, but I think I paid $20-30 or so. I believe I have an extra one at home, that you can use to see if that's the problem. If I do have one, you're welcome to it. I'll try to check tonight, if my feeble mind can remember it.

Try disconnecting the battery for awhile and connect back again...I got my car back from the body shop. I drove it off and the speedo didn't work. i disconnected the battery and then hooked it back up and it worked fine. you could also try resetting the ecu.
