But from what I've read on this site, the WP is definitely a relatively easy DIY job, and I think the t-stat is nearby, and just as easy. I think there's a "howto" on the wp replacement. The T-stat is pretty similar for most cars.

In Feb the Cdn exchange rate was 50%, so $300 US=$600 Cdn. It's 75% now, but it was really, really bad for awhile. But the taxes in Canada are AWESOME. Buy a pack of smokes=$8 to $12, no kiddin.

I am new here, having recently bought a 97Contour SE2.5mtx black/tan leather 98k km(60k miles). Plan to do some upgrading in a mildly extreme way :-). More on that later...
It just so happens the previous owner of my car had the WP /Therm changed in Dec of last year and I'm looking at the invoice.....! as follows;
GTH - 33248/ 33607 24.49
Therm/ gasket
UNR K030267 21.15
UNR Automotive Prod(whatever that is)
PW416 217.01
Water Pump
4 litre Anti Freeze 4.25/l 17.00
Lab General Labour NF 205.00

check out vehicle for heat and overheating
re & re Thermostat and gasket. Replace water pump
and refill cooling system
OVV vacuum vehicle

one ss n/c
shop supplies 9.50

sub. total 494.15
gst 34.58
pst 37.07

Total 565.80

There you have it as printed on the bill. The owner was a women which shouldn't matter especially in a repair like this. The shop(I bought privately and on our test drive pointed out the place) was a local Petrocan station in N. Vancouver.
Repairs aren't cheap!

Thanks a lot for your input. I hate being ripped off.
I think I will do what's suggested and call my uncle at uap to get me the parts and find a mechanic with ethics..
