Wjang hit it right on the head, do a slow burn, that fast burns leave too many errors that might be corrected on your home unit, but cannot be corrected in the car head unit.. Also check with the burner manufacturer as to what cd-r's they reccommend to use, they do make a difference, as well as some head units are finiky towards certain brands also..
couple links to help out..http://www.gum.de/it/download/english.htm http://www.fadden.com/cdrfaq/

Hi, thanks to all who replied. I have a new Blaupunkt Boston (I like the way it looks and it's supposed to dim with the dash lights, we'll see...) on the way from Crutchfield. I played around with every brand but Blaupunkt at Best Buy and they all played a CDR that won't play in the Contour deck, so I'm hoping it will work. My daughter's $29 discman even plays that particular CD. It is beyond me why Ford never offered a decent stereo in the Contour, they could at least of had a nice system for the SVT. Thanks for your help, Rick.

Good rule of thumb, don't go cheap on the media. The thicker (and thus generally more expensive) the better. Reason being is thinner media tends to "flex" on impact (causning skipping) where thicker media does not. My $.02....

I have no problems playing CD'r's in my car either. Both the stock head and my new Pioneer P720 play them fine. I burn at 6x's to 8x's with no problems. I dont know if the stockers in the cougars are different from the contours or not, but i thought id throw my 2 cents in.

BTW: i have a TDK Burner and use the cheapest cds i have found so far, PNY. SO thin i can see the graphics through the bottom of the cd with no problems...

My stock cd player has worked fine with CDR's. I dunno if this was mentioned, but the type of sfw you ue to burn the cd can make a difference to. The 'quick cd creator' that comes with a lot of burners sometimes screws up when 'closing' the cd-r. And like the others said..the slower burn helps.
