Is it necessary to disconnect the battery when installing a head unit?

As an electronics engineer I strongly recommend to disconnect the battery before screwing around with any piece of car electronics. Just don't be lazy and you'll save yourself from many possible troubles.

not if you do all the wiring a head of time and ground it.

Do the harness stuff, then take unit out. put new unit in.. that's it

that's what I was thinking, as long as I use the wire harness and not do any splicing with the live wires, I should be fine. Just don't want to go back and re-program the car's computer.
