After many many posts here, and searching the web because my 99 SE Zetec Atx would miss I finally came across a cure. So if your car misses at idle, and misses under slight to moderate throttle and rpm read this; According to the Ford parts guy (NOT the service guy, he's a SpEd) "the Zetec (and possibly the Duratec too?) takes a special fine wire plug. It will fire under low voltage whereas the non OE plugs won't", which is why at WOT my car ran fine, and at part throttle and at idle it would miss. Un-FREEKIN-believable !!! All this stress and work and talking and asking, and it's nothing but the plugs. So to any of you experiencing bucking who have just changed their plugs, go IMMEDIATELY to your local Ford dealer and get the specific plug for your application. The parts guy said "you'll see the catalog number is extremely long because there are many specific plugs for some of these Ford engines". It may not help you all, but I'm betting it will help alot of you. Good luck, Ken 99 SE

Just for clarification on the Duratec side of things, you need to get a double-platinum plug to avoid missing/bucking problems, and stick with OEM spec plugs. The Autolite part number (the Motorcraft equivalent) is APP764. I know about this problem first hand; I had missing problems under high load at highway speeds (80+mph) only. I had done a tuneup before learning of CEG and used really crappy plugs that claimed to be OEM replacements. After installing the Autolites I've had no problems.

Back on topic, congrats for finding the fix to your problem. I know how relieving it feels to solve a problem that's been bugging you for a while.

IMHO, I really don't think bucking and missing should be grouped together.

Missing is just, well, missing. An intermitant lack of power, maybe causing acceleration to "stutter". This is usually caused by some part of the the ignition system.

Bucking makes the car lurch, sometimes violently.

Bucking can be from many areas.
  • Bad engine mounts.
  • Severe fuel problem.
  • Bad sensor or sensor data.
  • Automatic transmission problem.
  • Clutch problem.
  • Static timing problem (Zetec).

If it's caused by the engine control system, the A/F is usually fluxuating wildly.

Just to start to diagnose the cause of bucking,
you must know enough to guess which type of problem it is.

I'd actually have to disagree with you a little. When I experienced my problem last year, it would first manifest as a "miss" just like you describe. However, the more I pressed on the accelerator, the more it developed into "bucking" just like you describe; not so violent, but enough to shake me around in the car. Granted, I haven't felt it for almost a year now so my recollection may be a little off, but that's what I remember.

Sometimes these terms are so subjective... I've had strange noises coming from my car that I don't even know how to describe.

In my Zetec it WAS the Autolite double platinums which caused the bucking/missing. I put in the fine-wire Motorcraft OE plugs yesterday and the problem disappeared. The Autolite have a much wider wire on the tip than the Motorcrafts. My car ran like a watch until I replaced the original plugs with the Autolites. Maybe Autolite has a fine wire low resistance plug, I dunno. In fact I put in 2 sets, the first lasted less than 2 weeks before the bucking started, but looking back the weather was cooler and I didn't use my a/c. Which was when the bucking started, after I turned the a/c on and it started, just once in awhile here and there, at idle, on the freeway, but it got progressively worse. I thought I had a bad plug, so I put in another set of Autolite double platinums and 3 days later the bucking returned. So I talked and talked to the good folks here at CEG and I called Art at Landmark Ford in Tigard Ore. He's the parts guy there and was very willing to help, which he did immensely. He told me that you have to have a very specific plug in my Zetec (and I'll bet the Duratec too) because the plugs will still fire with a low voltage charge from the ignition system. So when I recalled that it ran fine at WOT, when there was lots of charge and ran like crap at idle and under light throttle loads when there was not much electricity going to the plugs. So it all made sense all of a sudden with the help of another CEG'er that was having the same problem. He went to OE plugs just out of desperation. SO after I talked to Art at Landmark Ford it became crystal clear. Ken 99 SE Silver Frost Zetec ATX

I have a 2000 SE Zetec and I've been going around with my two Ford dealers around my parts saying I'm crazy. But since I have become a CEG'er. I may not be crazy - I'm having not a miss but a lack of power when I go up slight inclines. The car runs smooth on the flat or ,of course downhill, but when it starts going uphill at all, more of a "load" it seems to have a tendency to "miss" occasion. Could you tell more about the plugs?? I replaced mine with Autolites and it didn't help. Do you think it could be the wires instead???

The Autolites aren't the correct plug. Go to your local Ford dealer and get the correct plug, it's a Motorcraft part. The Autolites were the cause of my missing. Ken 99 SE Silver Frost Zetec Atx
