Have the premium sound system in my 95 as well. I think that all ford did was remove the amps from their standard stock head units, and place them in a separate case behind the glovebox.

When I bought the SVT off of my dad I knew that the first thing to be tossed would be the sound system. With the windows up and the car at idle it is barely tollerable. I thought the Mach 460 in the mustangs was the best a sound system could get and I was upset that it wasn't an option on the contours, until I had my friend w/ connections install a system in my SVT. Now I can't stand listening to the Mach. There is little way that anything in that system can be kept, the speakers are little more than black paper attached to a magnet that I would hardly consider qualified to pick up paper clips. The head unit has horrific power and won't play CD-R's, and Ford's proprietary wiring insures that using anything they installed will be quite a challenge.
I replaced the system with a Clarion deck which does support dimming, Fosgate Amps (1 for the doors and 1 for the sub), Infinity Kappa's in the doors (5x8's with directional tweeters), and a 12" Alchemy sub in the trunk. I am a little upset that I lost some trunk space with my installation (though professionals could do a better job) but I now want to run to my car to listen to music instead of using the stereo in my house.
