Mitsubitsi Lancer Evolution VIII I'm a mechanic for a living and I just got the liberty of driving one of these fine automobiles on Thursday at work after putting a full 3" stainless exhaust on it from front to rear, installing a blow-off valve, HKS Super AFR A/F manipulator, and adjustable boost controller. And wow! It's been so long since I've been into fast cars and performance as I've thought that bug had long since past. But after driving this incredibly fast car (EvoVIII will run 12.6 with all those mods I did), but I realized that my Contour sucks for any type of 1/4 mile performance or acceleration, period! I've always had a fast car my whole life, and the Contour V6 I got now is the very SLOWEST car I've ever owned. But I realized that after driving this haulass car that the bug is back, and I need to increase the performance of my Contour by FAR (want to drop at LEAST 1 full second 1/4 mi). I'm contemplating a Vortech 8psi SC on my 2.5L or going with hybrid 3.0L but I'm not sure which route to go (I'm not rich enough to do both). Any suggestions? Has anybody used the Vortech kit? Or is turbo like Warmonger the better approach to having artificial aspiration on a Contour V6?

I'd say go with the street flight turbo kit.

Gotta go w/ the turbo. No 2 ways about it. More tq and hp than the 3L, and much more power under the curve than the Vortech. Only problem with all that power is putting it to the ground! Contours aren't 1/4 mile monsters, but they hold their own. Good luck!

First off some background on my car...I have the Street Flight turbo along with some other goodies(suspension etc.). I went to the track about 2 months ago with the car running 5psi which dynoed 230whp/213wtq two weeks prior to the track day.
When I arrived I met 2 guys with EVO's, they were immediatly impressed with the quality of the turbo, and the overall appearance of the car. Unfortunately I felt that impressing an AWD EVO owner at the track would be near impossible in any FWD(I do have a Quaife/clutch). They wished me luck and we were off to tech, and then to run. My runs were very consistent in the 14.0 range at near 104mph, while they were running 14.2-14.3 at around 96-98mph.....they were pissed! I talked to one of the guys and told him to launch that thing hard as hell! He went 13.56 at 99mph, that was the best run that they got that night, while my best run was a 13.8 at 103mph.
So in comparison...same track, same conditions, two different EVO owners that claimed to have AWD Eclipse's prior to the EVO that could hardly in one instance put a better time on the board then my 5psi turboed SVT. Now I'm not stating that they cannot be faster, or made faster for that matter, but who's to say that my SVT on 10psi with drag radials WON'T be faster....we will see in the near future.
Oh, I say go for the turbo as it comes intercooled with nice quality craftmanship/materials, and makes that much more power. Yes it is initially more expensive, but if you want to make power on any F/I car then you want to be intercooled, and adding one to Vortech will put in the same price range.

The truth is that I'm in it for the daily grind. I will probably never even take my car to the track (maybe once just to check performance). And I guarantee that I never launch my car hard or even race it for that matter. I just want to have balls at the helm. I want to be able to pass cars with confidence again and not have to cross my fingers hoping that I have room, etc. I just want real world performance. I no longer compete, and I haven't been to the dragstrip and raced in almost 10 years, as that's not my bag anymore, so I don't think traction is a concern for me. Hell, I don't even care if I keep my open differential either. My range is basically 10-80mph. But fast (up or down).
Hey, on the Street Flight turbo kit, isn't that a water to air intercooler? If so, how often must you fill the reservior in the trunk to feed it? Does anyone offer an air to air one that fits the Contour? And finally, does anyone know if forged or hyperutectic pistons are offered for the 2.5 Duratec engine at this time? Are they even offered? The turbo sounds tempting, ah yes it does

Forged pistons are special order. The duratec motors come with hypereutectic pistons stock.
Sealed Power makes good quality hypereutectics for replacements.
SF intercooler doesn't normally need to be refilled. The water just circulates over and over. If you run a front mounted tank like I do then that changes things. If youwant to ice it up you'll need to flush out the old water prior to doing it.

I usually do a "refresh" flush once a week.
The turbo kit offers "real world" pull. If you're cruising in traffic and feel like making a pass, just punch it. It builds boost very quickly, and you'll be exceding the posted speed limit before you know it.

What does the turbo kit require to modify in order to increase the fuel or trick the computer under boost during open loop in order to get proper mixture? Do you need a different MAF caliberation or bigger injectors or eeprom chip or something of the like? Or is it just gonna run lean and melt pistons if I want to tach redline?
