I have an E0 with a blown engine and my mechanic found an svt engine from an E1 (or at least built for a 98.5-2000) however he said that it wouldn't work if the production dates didn't match. Is this true? I was under the impression that any year svt engine would work in any year svt. Really need help on this, thanks.

i don't think the production dates means anything...i don't see any reason why it wouldn't work....

I'd do it, you may not get the entire 5HP increase without a PCM program change, but my gut tells me the car should run fine.

The one thing to consider is the 2000 had a slightly higher compression ratio and slightly smaller displacement (just under 2.5L to get under tax barriers in other world markets) but still produces 200HP

Time to find a real mechanic. Production dates only matter if there have been any changes to the motors that would affect instillation/hookup/ECU.

What you have to be careful of is to make sure the donor engine is RETURN style like your E0, and the connector shape for the injectors. The green top injectors have a square connector while the orange tops are rectangular. This isn't a big deal though as you can simple swap your old injectors into the new motor and connect to your wiring or modify your connectors.

Regards, Alan

Why does the return style or returnless matter if I'm getting an entire new engine? I know there's a difference, but does it affect performance at all?

Well,

For one reason, you will have two fuel lines on the older E0, one that feeds the rail and one that returns to the tank.

The "returnless" won't have the return, if I understand correctly.

You would probably have to put your E0 fuel rail/injectors on, if you did get a "returnless" engine for replacement.

However, that is probably minor compared to rebuilding the broken engine.

FWIW,

TB

Also, fuel pressure is controlled via the PCM on returnless cars, so the programs are quite different.

Just curious ... why was the switch made to a "returnless" fuel system on the newer SVT engines? Whats the advantages?
