Early MTX takes 2.7 quarts. Some have used 3 quarts with no trouble, but I try to not quite put all three quarts in. The hand pump I use doesn't get everything out of the bottle but if a pour the remaining fluid into one bottle and pump as much as I can I still end up with a little less than 3 quarts and it seems to be fine. Even with the added friction modifier it is still less than 3 quarts.
The late MTX (as of early 2000) only takes 2.2 quarts. There were a lot of revisions inside the late trans and the capacity is less.
Many have reported that they just "fill to spill" with the car level and it works out fine. If you have a hard time getting the level, fill to spill, then take it off the jack to get it level while the fill plug is still off and you will loose enough fluid to get it down where it belongs. Don't forget to put the plug back in, even if you need to jack the car back up to get under it.
