This may sound like a silly question to a lot of people but for a newbie like myself, it's another issue in a days work.
I need to change the tranny fluid and was wondering if any CEG'ers have helpful advice in getting the job done. Do you guys use a siphon pumnp to get the fluid in? I can't imagine fitting a funnel to the fill-in plug.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I saw this posting and has already printed it out as a reference. However, I'm asking for suggestions on the filling process. Any special gadgets or tools that can get the job done quick? Thanks again.

I did redline MTL in my car... and it is tricky to get the fluid up in the fill plug.. what I did was.. I took a bottle of gear lube from murrays.. took of the top.. and put in on a clean cherry coke bottle... using that you can squirt the fluid up in the tranny. you would think it would drain back out.. but none dide.

I give my buddy at the place where I get my oil changed $10.00 and he does the labor as he has a machine that sucks out the old stuff and a manual pump to put it back in. Also, since your a newbie, the MTX takes 3 quarts of ATF, may I suggest some Mobil 1 synthetic ATF, $4.99 a quart at Autozone. So for $15.00 in parts and what ever your local quick lube guy charges, your all set and don't have to worry about it for some time down the road. Also you might want to get some friction modifier from the dealership, just a little more "peice of mind", thats all

If you're changing the fluid to synthetic, I highly highly recommend friction modifier. I had a hard time getting into gear w/ just the full synth. and no f.m. Tips for pouring in: I had a friend help. I bought an extender tube thingy (good info eh? :rolleyes), and ran the tube from up top near the radiator. I aimed the tube while under the car. My friend squeezed from above. It's damn tight under there for a 1qt bottle.

I was under the impression that ATF has to be used with FM.. because the ATF is too slick by itself for our tranny's?

Early MTX takes 2.7 quarts. Some have used 3 quarts with no trouble, but I try to not quite put all three quarts in. The hand pump I use doesn't get everything out of the bottle but if a pour the remaining fluid into one bottle and pump as much as I can I still end up with a little less than 3 quarts and it seems to be fine. Even with the added friction modifier it is still less than 3 quarts.
The late MTX (as of early 2000) only takes 2.2 quarts. There were a lot of revisions inside the late trans and the capacity is less.
Many have reported that they just "fill to spill" with the car level and it works out fine. If you have a hard time getting the level, fill to spill, then take it off the jack to get it level while the fill plug is still off and you will loose enough fluid to get it down where it belongs. Don't forget to put the plug back in, even if you need to jack the car back up to get under it.
