Interested in what you decided...when looking for a replacement for my car I found plenty of used 4 cyl contours for under 3k..some as new as 97...why not just buy another contour?

Well... Glad to hear the buyer would be aware of what they're getting. From your Band-Aid post it sounded like you were going to give some unsuspecting slob the shaft.

Okay, more news. I've been driving the car back & forth to work the last few weeks. I live 2 miles from work.

Well , last monday, the car started a new problem. After running, when I tried to restart it, it wouldn't crank. After it cooled down, it would start.

Well, it slowly got worse, one day it just wouldn't start.

Had it towed to the dealer, they said it needed a starter motor & wanted to charge me 400 bucks !!

I said WHAT ?? 400, what the H for ? They were going to charge me 265 for the starter !!

Told them hold on, I went to Discount Auto, got one for 130 bucks w/ lifetime warranty. I gave that to the dealer, they said they'd charge 140 to install (includes 1 hour trouble shooting)

They installed it, it started once & wouldn't restart. Took them another day to figure out the problem.

Turns out the starter was fine, they reinstalled the old one (which I returned) They found the wiring to the MLP switch had shorted out, the repaired the wiring.

Now, the good news !!! That fixed the trans !!!!

Last year they replaced that very switch.

The trans works just fine, shifts into third & overdrive just fine.

The final cost was 180, as they needed to charge another hour of trouble shooting.

So, for now I plan to keep the car.

This still doesn't explain why your ATX Oil turned black in under a year,
if you drive the car just 2 miles each day.

I am wondering if the MLP was shorted, if it was telling the PCM that it was in the wrong gear and when all the other conditions were right, the PCM was locking the TC. This would overheat the tranny and over a period of time, discolor the fluid.

Just a thought anyway...

Welcome to the wonderful world of Stealerships.

At any rate, praise be... Glad to hear you're gonna keep the car for a while longer. I'm sure you'll learn to love it since its really a great machine when running properly.

Please let us know if you have any further difficulties or concerns, we're always willing to help when we can (as you have seen).
