For all of those that have subs in the trunks of their Contours, did you find it necessary to somehow port the sound into the cabin.

I would like to run a 10 inch Bazooka tube or similar in the trunk but I am concerned that I will not hear anything in the cabin without somehow porting the rear deck or something. I will be powering the sub with a PPI PC2100 which will only give me about 100 watts or so in bridge mode. So I don't have a lot of power to spare.

Any insight into this would greatly be appreciated.

TIA, Darren.

I have '98 'tour and I am running two blaupunkt 12's in the trunk and they are right behind the seat. I have listened to them with the seat out and in and only a very small volume difference is detecable. Truthfully if you are really hammering on your subs sometime when a good tune is on, the seat will provide a sort of filter for distortion. Good Luck.

P.S. I wouldn't recommend Bazooka tubes.

I've found, that with the seats up, the sound quality improves drastically. Mainly due to cabin resonance. The bass becomes more upfront, that is, it's harder to localize. And if your front speakers go descently low, the bass will smear toward the front, giving the image that the subs are somehow up front, not booming from the rear.

BUT, having the seats up, will really deduct from volume. The seats are steel backed, and the cushioning is 5 inches or so thick.

heheh, seats are not a good noise filter. If you can't hear them distorting, but distorition is the number one cause of driver failure. (drivers as in speakers)

The direction the subwoofer is pointing makes the most difference in whether or not you should port the rear deck. About the only reason you NEED to port the deck is if the subwoofers are firing(Pointing)up. Like if you had them between the strut towers firing up. If you end up using a Bazooka Tube I would recommend mounting it close the back seat firing rear-ward. This effectively uses the trunk as a large 'chamber' for the bass to resonate in. Good Luck.

Peace,

I currently have two Pioneer 10" working off of 600 watts in a bandpass box. They face backwards from the seat. The sound is very good and there is no mistaking that they're there. I would look into something like that and not a bazooka tube.

it could be very difficult to tune the ports properly. depending on the frequency you choose to tune them at and the resonant harmonics of the car you could get really good bass, or really crappy bass. it's a 50/50 chance.

i have 2 8's mounted in a modestly sized sealed box and i get plenty of rumble when i want to. i have found the best placement to be against the trunk latch as far towards the back of the car as possible. i might upgrade to 2 10's if the 8's die on me (they're 5 years old). but, a lot depends on what kind of bass you want from your system.

I'm going to go with one 10" sub in a sealed box. Sealed boxes can be smaller than ported boxes. Also, ported systems are like boom boxes - way too much output all at one frequency. I hope one 10" sub in a sealed box will be enough, but I need to save tranuk space. Bandpass enclosureshave an even better (flatter) response curve. Infinity (www.infinitysystems.com) has nice graphs showing each type of enclosure).
