Terry Wallis, 39, had been at the centre of an accident in July 1984 when a car he was travelling in plunged into a creek.
The driver of the vehicle, Mr Wallis' friend, died.
Mr Wallis was discovered by rescuers a day later, but was comatose.
He has many historic events to catch up with, including the election of his state governor, Bill Clinton, to the presidency of the United States, his time in office and his handover to George W Bush.
He startled his family by speaking suddenly almost a month ago.
"He started out with 'Mom' and surprised her and then it was 'Pepsi' and then it was 'milk,'" Alesha Badgley, Stone County Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre social director, said.
"And now it's anything he wants to say."
Mr Wallis' father, Jerry Wallis, said his son uttered his first word. "He has improved every day since," he said.
Terry Wallis' wife, Sandi, said the whole family had missed his company.
"It's been hard dealing with it. It's been hard realising the man I married can't be there," she said.
Mr Wallis also has a daughter, Amber, who was born shortly before the accident took place.
She is now 19 and Mr Wallis - who was left a quadriplegic as a result of the crash - has said he wants to walk again, for her.
His mother, Angilee Wallis, called her son's return to consciousness "a miracle".
"I couldn't tell you my first thought, I just fell over on the floor," she said.
Doctors at the rehabilitation centre said Mr Wallis' recovery might be due in part to his family taking him out at weekends and special occasions.
"The doctor said that's why he remembers things; we might have kept his mind going," Sandi Wallis said.

A scant 10 minutes after snapping out of the coma, he could hardly believe that Arkansas had regressed even further into the stone ages over the past 19 years  However, he was pretty happy with how his Wal*Mart stock did over the past two decades. He is now planning to buy a Winston Cup team. TB

But seriously - think how weird that would be. I mean, just look at a few of the things he missed:
1) Collapse of the Soviet Union.
2) Sept. 11
3) Britney Spears losing her virginity.
4) Bush, Clinton, Bush jr.
5) Wars in Iraq
6) You can't smoke in most places now.
7) The Simpsons
8) The massive nuclear war with that super species of highly intelligent whales, and how mankind was destroyed and rebuilt by robots, and now we robots are simply using this man as an experiment for our own sick pleasure.
9) Pogs
10) The Angels actually winning a World Series.

It must be like waking up in a foreign land. Let's see if I can come up with 10:
Things he probably didn't see before the coma:
1. The Internet
2. Satellite TV
3. Speed limits above 55MPH (ok he may have seen them, but he wasn't driving at the time)
4. All new cars are fuel injected
5. Probably didn't see many minivans
6. SUV's were still used by people who drove off road
7. Two space shuttle disasters
8. Domestic Terrorism (OKC and twice at WTC)
9. Stealth Aircraft
10. Cell Phones for everyone who has a pulse.

I think I would be pretty dissapointed if I were that guy. I mean, this is all we accomplished in the last 19 years? Where are the flying cars, why aren't we living on Mars, and what the hell is with Yao Ming?
