heh, after reading that post, an older and more bigotted friend of mine had the following to say:
"Native americans, huh. What a bunch of tree hugging crap. Native Americans were all Canadians before that, Russians before that, europeans before that, and Iraqi's even before that. Historical perspective is nice, except for when you limit it to the last 400 years."
Cheers, Tim

Two tidbits on the poll. First, the longitudinal data was interesting in that we're seemingly more proud of our country now than in years past. Perhaps you could attribute part of this to 9/11; perhaps some would blame it on Clinton. I wonder if liberals and other left-of-center people were more proud of the US back then but because their person isn't in office are more disenfranchised now...?
Second, as I see it there is a difference between being proud to be an American and being satisfied with current policies. Just because I'm 100% behind the US does not mean I'm 100% satisfied with what is going on. IMHO it is the best show in town.

What does it mean "proud to be an american" ?
I take some of it to mean being proud to live in a country where we have a lot of freedoms and opportunities other countries don't.
There are a lot of things associated with being american that I'm not proud of though. That doesn't mean I'm un-patriotic though.

I am not so sure about this.. I am pretty conservative (though surrounded by liberals) and would still have been proud to be American if poled when Clinton was in office, even during the peak of his scandals. Being American is more than about one man, any man. It is about certain "inalienable rights, that all me are created equal"...it is about liberty, it is about standing up to evil, it is about opportunity for all who put forth an effort. Clinton, while being a self serving, lying, cheating, man did NOT eliminate these principals.
Do liberals not see the question, or are they truely not proud? I think in general that leftmost liberals are less happy because they cling to failed socialistic principals that they feel strongly should still work but never will because they do not factor in flawed human nature. Internal conflict does not lead to happiness or pride..

Dan,
I agree to a point, but I do think there will be a number of conservatives who hang their pride on the CIC and not just on America.
Heck, you don't have 100% of conservatives proud right now.
I do think it does tell us that in very general terms a conservative is probably more proud to be an American than a liberal. But you can't extrapolate from this that all conservatives are patriotic and all liberals are not. Heck, you can even say that most liberals are also proud to be Americans.
What troubles me are the large numbers of people who are not proud to be Americans. Even if they are in the minority, what is it they want. Do they want the "Workers Paradise" here in America, or do they think they would rather be a citizen of another nation?
On to the question, someone above said it was vague or something to that effect. Well, I think if you are trying to capture a feeling, you have to be somewhat vague. Simply put, are you proud, extremely proud, etc. What is your gut reaction, answer quickly.
No contrived hypothetical situations that you need to decide the outcome, just tell us how you feel.
I do think it is a recurrent poll, so let me see if I can find other data for other years.

Now I don't get it...
Are some people saying that being 'Very Proud' instead of 'Extremely Proud' of this country, is a hugely negative thing?
Sounds to me like the people who expect a near 100% Extremely Proud poll result are clinging to an impossible Utopia here..Especially since most people bring the contry's political state into the calculation (meaning everyone ALWAYS disagrees with something in this country).
ps. Only 1% of surveyed said that they were 'Not proud'. And even that is a rounded number.
