Hello, I drive a 1999 Ford Contour LX Zetec ATX. While driving today, with the air on, it suddenly turns off. I had it on Max-A/C with it on the 3rd out of 4th settings. It just suddenly turned off for no reason, I wasn't changing settings or anything. It works If and Only If I put it on High, the 4th setting out of 4, but not for any of the first 3 settings. Any ideas?

Do a search next time. There are a BUNCH of threads on this...has to do with a faulty speed selector switch resistor. There is a TSB on it. Search for Blower Motor too

I did do a search, I swear! I search in "all forums" for "Air conditioning" in "all posts", and I got no results. Thanks for your answer anyway, this was great info, you are the man!

Well, you must have searched incorrectly, because I just did the same search for the past week and came up with 22 hits!
96 Contour SE

108,000 mi.
Replaced: crankshaft w/ DMD, EGR valve (clogged), EVR, DPFE, PCV valve, evap emissions hose & tube (cracked), window regulator (broken), LH & RH PCV tubes, UIM gasket (leak), ignition coil

yeah, it was weird, I went back later to do the search, and it worked fine. I am having intermittent connections at work, so mayber that was what happened. At any rate, I just made an appointment tfor next Tuesday to have the safety recall performed. They said it would be free of charge, and that I could not pick up the resistor pack and install it myself because it is a safety recall and it is illegal to do that. I am going to take a look at it tonight though, and make sure it is not a fire hazard!

Well, turns out the 99+ contours are not covered under this safety recall. I bought the resistor pack for $7.85 at my friendly local Ford dealer, and installed it myself in about 5 minutes, and my A/C is back to normal! Excellent! Requires a 7/64 hex wrench.

MY FORD DEALERS SUCK FOR PRICES!!!
I had to pay over $15 for that freakin' part!
Everybody else gets DMDs for $45, I have to pay $60 if I want one. Next think you know the $80 metal impeller water pump is gonna cost me 150 freakin' dollars!!
I'm also having to pay $4 for a spark plug, what are you payin'?
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
