The "older-model cassette deck" to which I referred was the high-end cassette deck of Alpine's 2001 line. Oh, and I don't listen to any Easy-E or anything like it.

Moreover (because I'm like that), my Alpine head units (all nine that I've had experience with) did not have loose buttons and the rotary dials for volume were perfect for me. It takes less of my concentration away from actually driving (what you're supposed to be doing in a car) than holding down a button to raise or lower the volume... and yeah, 48x4 max wattage is pretty old fashioned.
