IMO Alpine is way overrated. The buttons are loose-feeling and have fallen off in many of my friend's experiences. They don't make them like they used to. Plus I hate those stupid rotary volume adusters on car stereos. It is so cheap feeling and too easy to accidentally crank it while simply trying to turn it up slightly. I think many go with Alpine based on what Eazy-E rapped about. I don't think they are really that good. Just my $.02 though. I'm sure many are very happy with their Alpines. But I think they suck. Any halfway decent HU is going to sound better than a tapedeck from 1982. Pioneer HU's are solid as hell. I have never heard of Nak. Good luck with it though.....sure was expensive. Got my Kenwood Mp3/Cd player with 48x4 for $200.00 even. I'm kinda old fasion when it comes to electronics though.

Just in case this comment was in reference the following lines from my previous post in this thread... RMk wrote: Quote:

The "older-model cassette deck" to which I referred was the high-end cassette deck of Alpine's 2001 line. Oh, and I don't listen to any Easy-E or anything like it.
Moreover (because I'm like that), my Alpine head units (all nine that I've had experience with) did not have loose buttons and the rotary dials for volume were perfect for me. It takes less of my concentration away from actually driving (what you're supposed to be doing in a car) than holding down a button to raise or lower the volume... and yeah, 48x4 max wattage is pretty old fashioned.

I had a Nakamichi for my first upgrade. Looked really stock which was what i was going for... too bad it didn't hold up and eventually stopped playing pressed cd's well. If it had any light scratches it would skip like crazy. They said something about it not working becuase they had such high sound quality that the laser wouldn't pick it up or some such story. Lots of people say they are great units, but i always think twice now. Try taking some of the cd's you play alot to a store and test it in the player. You will be able to see its tolerance for different cd's. GL with your decision!

Hey I said it was my opinion. You aked "Nak or Alpine?" which was opening the flood gates for opinions of the two brands. I gave you what you asked for so lay off. I also said that I'm sure many people have had Alpines with no problems and love them. So chill. And by the way...."high-end" doesn't mean much if it's a tape deck, of any model, PERIOD. It's your sh!t man don't get all defensive. I'm glad you like Alpine. I just don't think they're all that like some people do. Congrats on the new HU. By the way someone posted baaaad experiences with a Nak. Since that is the brand you got I would be a little more concerned with that. Again just my opinion. Good luck and sorry for the inconvenience.
Oh and by the way. How old are you? Not that it's any of my business or that being old or young is good or bad but I must pose a question. If Alpine makes such high quality products then why have you gone through nine of them?

Naks are known to do that, thats why they have 3 yr warranties so u can send em in to get cleaned and what-not, or you could do it yourself.

First, it wasn't me who asked the question, I just responded to the thread and I've kinda been watching it since I've been looking at Naks also.

Yup, and I'm one of them. Oh, and I'm generally pretty chilled at the keyboard. I don't get "all fired up" by an arrangement of pixels on my monitor (or other people's opinoins for that matter). I just have my own opinions and I don't mind sharing.

I didn't say it was a high-end head unit, I said it was one of Alpine's better cassette decks. :P Anyway, thanks, I'm glad I like Alpine too. I don't think they're "all that" either, but you've gotta admit, their head units are better than all but a few and in some cases (subject to application) they'll be your best bet.

I haven't gone through nine of them personally, but over the course of the past six years, I've handled and had experience at great length with a good number of them, including the CDA-7990 and the CDA-7998, a couple of very nice head units. I still think the CDA-9815 is the single most attractive aftermarket head unit I've ever seen.
.RMk.. Wait.. on the age question: I most commonly decline to answer based on my own realization that it will skew the opinion of my peers concerning my credibility. (i.e. draw your own conclusion.)
