Yep. vac to EGR valve -> EGR valve opens -> engine coughs and stalls at idle (EGR is supposed to be closed at idle).
if you suspect the EGR system to be faulty and think that the valve is not stuck open, you can disable the whole system temporarily. I don't exactly remember how to do it, but I guess all you have to do is disable the solenoid by disconnecting the wire and maybe shorting the connector. The engine should run fine (in fact better) w/o the EGR.
I'm also at diagnosing EGR, just waiting for my roomie to dig up his vac pump and gauge
