so what kind of engine was under the hood   and do you or anyone know if the GTZ kind of took over them?

Yeah Cliff, I second that. Definitely one of the top sleepers of ALL TIME. Here is one I found on Ebay. It's a steal if this is what one is looking for.

turbo-charged, intercooled, Mitsubishi 16-valve 2.0 litre engine rated at 195 hp @ 6000 rpm and 203 lb-ft of torque @ 3000 rpm
but you can do mad upgrades and easliy achieve over 300 horsies

The GTZ was/is Mitsubishi's unfortunate answer to a 'sporty' Galant, and shares very little with the original VR-4. A spectacularly average FWD sedan carrying a V6 saddled up with a 4-speed slushbox, the GTZ hasn't garnered any credible praise as a sport driving machine because, well, it isn't worthy of much praise.
A hand-shaker on the console and a better sorted out suspension would help...but even if it did, the GTZ would never carry the same impact as the old VR-4.
