Well those that are about to do this I salute you!
Be prepared for anything!
I picked up my Turbine sensor today and thought what the hell I can do this
this afternoon no problem it should take 45 minutes.

NO PROBLEM my a$$!
That thing wouldn't budge I used 1 can of liquid wrench! (yup 1 can).
Started off thinking I could do it with the wheel on, I tried couldn't budge it, so pulled the wheel off.
Still couldn't budge it!
So I get out the mini crowbar to break the seal a little, it was working great!
Got my neighbour to grab the vise grips while I gently use the crowbar on the seal (we are an hour into this so far)
an what happens SNAP!!!!!!!!!
Damn thing shattered and went straight in with nothing to pull from to get it out.
I spend the next 2.5 hours drilling, chipping, pulling....etc
Finally at the 4 hour mark! (yup 4 hours) it slides out like butter!!!!!
Damn thing has a magnet in it that sucks it back in everytime you get it close to getting it out...
My magnet finally broke off and with 3 different sets of needle nose it finally came out!!!!!

It took 10 minutes to put in new sensor, but took 4 hours to get it out!

So all I will say is GOOD LUCK, clear your whole day and be very patient!!!
Was it worth it, damn I don't know let me drive somewhere first!!!!!!

Previous installer probably forgot the petroleum jelly.

Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor

Removal

1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to «Section 100-02».

2. Place a drain pan beneath the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor.

3. Remove the TSS sensor.

-Disconnect the TSS sensor electrical connector.

-Remove the bolt.

-Inspect the TSS sensor bore.

4. Inspect the O - ring seal for nicks or cuts; install a new as necessary.

Installation

Note:
Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly to the O - ring seal before installation.

1. Install the TSS sensor.

-Connect the TSS electrical connector.

2. Remove the drain pan.

3. Lower the vehicle.

4. Check the transmission fluid level, add Motorcraft MERCON® Multi - purpose automatic transmission fluid or equivalent meeting MERCON ® specification as necessary.

5. Start the engine and move the transaxle range selector lever through all gear positions.

I didn't think so either, but just quoted '98 service CD verbatim.

Guys maybe my mind is not working well today ... but what does the TSS do? Did you get a better one or did yours fail. I guess I'm just confused!

The turbine speed sensor controls the shift points in the tranny. Replacing the TSS with an updated sensor eliminates the 1-2 bang in an auto tranny. If you let off the gas under hard acceleration just as the tranny want's to shift from 1 to 2 you will induce a large bang and hard shift.
