what are they going to do ???
apparently they (the music industry) is tired of all the illegal cd's burned and are going to start to go after people. it's weird though, b/c how can they prove that you burned the cd from a place like Kazaa? i have it on at work and i just listen to the songs, i don't burn them (at least not here anyways ) then what about people who record songs off the radio, they should get them too right? are we talking about the same thing
im thinking that whats gonna happen is that 'they' are going to go after your folders the same way peple on kazaa and other sites can more or less look into your folders....the people uploading and downloading the most songs will be spotted and they'll go after them
my solution is to get a burner and get the songs on cd and OFF the harddrive altogether as u gather them...it means u wont be sharing but it may mean u wont get caught
now i'll go on and read the rest of the posts and see just how misguided i am
well myself from the beginning i cllicked the "do not share files with other members" clicky box (yea ti isn't nice but i'm lazy and like my pooter fast) hopefully that might slow down some of the investigators in this, not like i have a lot of stuff anyways. maybe 200 items in all...i doubt it is even that.

Hmm I never have that problem with the cds I buy ...must have something to do with the quality of the artist whose CD's your buying. Maybe you should try listening to some bands other than what radio DJs and record company executives tell you is cool .

I'm interested to hear how people have changed their file sharing habits. Personally, I moved what little new music I have out of my shared folder... but I left a bunch of older and more obscure music and videos in there. Also, I'm rarely "connected" - I usually only go online if I'm downloading something.

Same...I haven't done any serious D/Ling of music in a long while, for starters. My shared files are all tracks that you already find online, like some live recordings of my cousin's band and stuff like that. I've ripped my entire CD collection (a couple hundred between me and my wife) to MP3, but that's a separate, non-shared drive.
Oh, yeah...side benefit of MP3 ripping. When my car stereo was stolen, it had one of my purchased CDs in it, so that's gone too. I still have the case, though. Anyway, since I've got MP3 copies of it, I can just covert those back to WAV format, burn a new disc, and put it back in its case. So...yeah, wanted to share.

i'm not even worried...whats the chances they'll find you...think about how many people are on there and how long each case will take. 50 years down the road they'll still be taking people to court...

Personally, that's the biggest problem for me, buying a CD that has about 2-3 good songs and the rest is garbage. I have no recourse once I buy it. I can't take it back, etc. I really enjoyed Blockbuster Music when it was still around since they would let you listen to a CD before you bought it. Their only problem was that their prices were too high. I'm sure that was to cover the cost of CDs being used to listen to and for the ones that don't sell.
If they would bring that back in some form or another, then at least I'd know what I was spending my hard earned cash on. Some days, I feel like I'm being raped by the music industry.

The thing that really pisses me off about the RIAA is that they want to make it legal for them to detroy any computer that has MP3'ed copywrited material. They also say that making mp3 backups of the cd's you bought is illegal too. Again they want it there way or no way. They don't care about the art and enjoyment that people get out of music, they just care about the money they get. If you ask me, they have enough money. They attribute their losses to mp3's, while the economy is in the pooper. It just isn't right. About the computer thing, I fear an invasion of privacy. If not that, as weak as it is, they do want to destroy any computer with mp3's on it. That's just wrong. This is all coming because of the Napster case. Since napster is gone, the problem didn't go away. If that case was handled differently this prolly wouldn't have happened. It just goes to show you that the RIAA cares only about the bottom line.

So you just build a throw-away computer and use that for your sharing. Maybe run an O/S that doesn't have paper thin security like Windows I suspect most of the software they are looking to build to delete files will be Windows based. Those measures will be fairly ineffective with an O/S that is running a secure file system. I don't even have Kazaa, but I do think there are linux and perhaps even Solaris ports of the software. If so, run it as a non-root, non-privledged user and all they can destroy are the files of that one user. No big deal. TB

We need more CDs where most of the songs are good....not just 2.
